The Olympics
The Olympics, alongside it’s renown for competitive sporting excellence, is widely regarded as an event that has positive community investment - mainly through regeneration projects.
As IgniteHope 2012 is in the same year as the 2012 Olympics, and the theme of community investment is so cohesive, we want to encourage young people to be active agents of community transformation by promoting sport.
It is our intension to approach sports teams, individuals and sporting organisations to partner with a range of projects across South Wales. This will most commonly take form by inviting a team to come and run skill sessions or tournaments at a fun-day.
We believe that this will create opportunities for community cohesion, encourage young people to engage with the challenging discipline of sport and show value of an area by hosting the event there.
IgniteHope's top 5 sporty ideas!
If you hear ‘The Olympics’ what comes to mind… Sport? Teams? People? Worldwide event? Fun? Excitement? This year it is 2012 and as we all know, with 2012 comes The Olympic games!
At IgniteHope 2012 we have decided to grasp the Olympic theme and tie it into the vision of IgniteHope, which is all about social cohesion, engagement, outreach & transformation. The aim of bringing IgniteHope and The Olympics together is to incorporate fresh ideas of social interaction. With all the significantly varying projects based in areas of South Wales, you may be asking yourself, how can my project get involved with this sporty theme?
Thinking up new and workable ideas can be quite daunting, but never fear! Here are IgniteHope’s top 5 sporty ideas, which could be tied into your project or can be used as kick start inspiration to base your project on!
1 // Plan a sporty fun day for all ages, with lots of mini sport games, sporty decorations, bouncy castles, give out some good for you food etc. This could be done as a main project or alongside other project ideas.
2 // Organise a sports day – think of those classic games like the egg & spoon race, fancy dress obstacle course, 3 legged race. Get creative and have fun!
3 // Contact local sports coaches – see if you can get sports people to come along to your project and coach the young people in different sports. E.g. get a basketball player, to teach how to shoot hoops. Even a football freestyler; get the young people having a go at something new and appealing.
4 // Think dance! We all know how popular dance is – from ballroom to urban to Zumba… we love it! Contact people in your church, local dance classes, leisure centres to see if someone could share some awesome dance moves, which could get the young people to pick up a new hobby to continue after IgniteHope 2012!
5 // Organise your own question of sport style quiz competition – get together in your church hall or community centre, serve food, get in teams and test your communities sports knowledge! Our partners at Christians in Sport have produced multi-media sports quizzes for adults and young people. For more information go to
